Artist U Marlar was born in 1953 in Nandawkyun Village, Upper Myanmar, to farming parents. He graduated from the State School of Fine Arts, Mandalay, studying under masters like U Kan Nyunt, U Aye Kyaw, and U Kyaw Lay. His paintings often focus on historical places in Myanmar, influenced by his interest in archaeology. U Marlar worked in the Department of Archaeology for nine years before teaching Art and Design at the Sounder School of Textile. He later became an Art Instructor at the Mandalay State School of Fine Art until 1999, when he began focusing entirely on art. Despite this, he continues to be invited as a guest lecturer and mentor. U Marlar's artworks are known for their maturity, serenity, and detailed portrayal of historical sites in Bagan and Mandalay. His paintings capture a bygone era of Myanmar's rural life and community in both watercolor and oil, making him a respected figure in national and international art circles. His works are displayed in the Myanmar National Museum and collections worldwide. Watercolor is U Marlar's preferred medium, and he is known for his expertise in this area.
